minorearth's fic recs

Fic recs by minorearth.

rating: PG-13

pairing: Gen-ish, possible background Clint/Coulson and pre-Steve/Tony

status: oneshot

author: lazyscience @ Tumblr

author’s summary:  Steve Rogers was a bookworm before he was a superhero. Not much has changed.

I could disclaim that this was written by a friend of mine, but that’s not even needed, because it’s awesome enough that I would have recced it anyway. :) Fantastic Avengers team dynamics, great literary references of all sorts of varying types and genres, and a nuanced, layered characterization of Steve that is occasionally lacking in the Steve-centric fic I’ve found. Lovely and thoughtful!

author’s summary: To Frigga, family is not formed by those who bear her own blood.

*

A lovely short piece written from Frigga’s point of view, about her children and her talents and the pain that comes with both. She’s the character I most wish we’d seen more of in Thor - in a movie that revolved around daddy issues, it would have been great to see more of a strong mother figure. This is a great, more than slightly heartbreaking piece that feels like my own headcanon about Frigga and her relationship with her sons.

author: Petra @ AO3

author’s summary: The Avengers go to see a revival of Star-Spangled Man! directed by Darren Nichols.

Crossovers are kind of a hit and miss prospect for me - a lot of them just leave me facepalming. But when they work, I adore them. Which is probably obvious, given that I’ve now recced two in two days.

This one’s probably funnier if you’ve seen Slings & Arrows - and if you haven’t, you should go do that right now, especially if you have any love of or experience in theater - but even if you haven’t, the concept of everyone attending a musical based (very loosely) on Steve’s old life is amusing enough. A fun bit of fluff, good if you need a giggle or two!

rating: T/PG-13

pairing: hinted Nathaniel/Velanna

status: oneshot

author: Selkit @ FF.net, coppermarigolds @ Tumblr

author’s summary: When a routine Deep Roads mission goes awry, Velanna is forced to come face to face with her prejudices.

Written for last year’s girlsavesboy ficathon on LJ. I have a great love of Nathaniel/Velanna, and of fics in which Velanna figures out how to deal with her feelings about being a Warden and/or living amongst humans. This one does both, and does it well. It has a lovely, believable Velanna voice, and a fast pace that fits the action of the story.

rating: General Audiences

pairing: none

status: oneshot, potentially part of a series

author: beingevil @ AO3

author’s summary: Thor has never wanted anything to do with the Mage-Templar war, until the Templars come to take Loki away. But this is Loki, and Loki always has a plan.

Link to story

When I saw this story on AO3, I knew it had to be my first rec. Crossing over my two current favorite fandoms? Sold!

Deeply AU for both fandoms, but in a way that fits both the characters and the DA lore; because clearly, if Loki is playing Bethany to Thor’s Hawke - even playing Loki as sympathetic - things are going to be a little bit different. The way the author has placed these characters in Kirkwall feels authentic, and makes me want to know more about how they’d fit into the DA storyline. Definitely worth a read if you’re a fan of both!

This is a Tumblr dedicated to minorearth’s fanfic recs! Things to note, in bullet points, because I like them.

- As of right now (current edit: June 2012), the main fandoms you’ll see recced are Dragon Age, Avengers, and Mass Effect. But I’m multifandom and attracted to shiny objects, so any fandom could pop in here at any time!

- I read, and therefore rec all sorts of fic - gen, het, slash, femmeslash; FPF and RPF,  drama and crack, original characters … nothing’s out of bounds here!

- If, for some reason, you’re an author who wants me to remove the link to your fic, just send me an ask and I’ll do so!

- I’d like to tag my recs with an author’s Tumblr name, if possible, so they might be able to find it. If you know someone’s name that I haven’t tagged, let me know!

- Oh, and by the way, the Tumblr name has nothing to do with hubris. It’s a fairly dumb reference to the song I named my main account after. :)
